Broxted Church,

Dedicated to St Mary the Virgin,Broxted church occupies an ancient Celtic site and the present 12th and 13th century building replaces and probably incorporated a part of a Saxon structure. The walls are built of flint, local pebbles, glacial boulders and some Roman brick. The whole church was heavily restored in 1876. At this time the weather boarded belfry was rebuilt entirely. The pulpit is a remarkably fine one, in beautifully carved oak, dating from the early 17th century. The area under the belfry at the west end of the nave forms the journalist's corner. There are two modern stained glass windows: The Window of Captivity and the Window of Freedom, symbolising the ordeal of the Beirut hostages. The hostage John McCarthy was brought up in Broxted
