Chickney Church,

which is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, is a remarkable survival of a largely Saxon building, consisting originally of a simple small scale nave and apsidal chancel.

In the early 13th century the chancel was extended and in the 14th a west tower was added. Although later window openings were added, a number of the original Saxon windows remain. Essentially, the church remains preserved as an English building, free from Norman and other foreign styles.

In modern time the original alter stone was found intact, buried in the churchyard, and re-instated. In 1972 Chickney became a part of the Broxted parish and the church ceased to be used for regular worship. It is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust
