Chickney Church, which is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, is a remarkable survival of a largely Saxon building, consisting originally of a simple small scale nave and apsidal chancel. In the early 13th century the chancel was extended and in the 14th a west tower was added. Although later window openings were added, a number of the original Saxon windows remain. Essentially, the church remains preserved as an English building, free from Norman and other foreign styles. |

In modern time the original alter stone was found intact, buried in the churchyard, and re-instated. In 1972 Chickney became a part of the Broxted parish and the church ceased to be used for regular worship. It is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust |
