THE APRIL LETTER TO THE UNITED PARISH

Dear People of the Five Parishes
Our summer rota of services begins this month which means we have to be extra alert, reading the cover of the Magazine to see which church is being used.  We do make every effort to share worship amongst our four ancient and lovely buildings which enables them to be kept very much alive and ensures a good-sized congregation when we gather on a Sunday morning.
An unusual event will happen on the 6th April when we welcome the Essex Church Recorders to Tilty.  They have recently made a detailed record of Tilty Church and all that is in it and they will be speaking to us at our 11.00 am service about their report.  Do make a note of the date – it promises to be a most interesting occasion.
The 27th April is Rogation Sunday; the day when we ask God to bless the fields, crops and work of the farmers.  Although the timings of agricultural practice have changed radically and fields are now often sown in the autumn, there is still a place for this traditional day.  Rogation provides an opportunity to recognise what we often take for granted – food production in all its aspects – to give thanks and to pray for all involved.  We must not allow ourselves to be seduced by romantic pictures of old tractors followed by flocks of seagulls, making their slow way across a gently sloping field.  Modern farming is capital intensive, responding to and dependant on international market forces, highly regulated and threaded through with ethical questions about trade and transport.  Modern food production surely needs God’s gracious Spirit.   A good book on this subject is So Shall We Reap by Colin Tudge, published by Penguin, which you might find interesting.
April is a month of lengthening days, of chilly winds and spring sunshine.  I am always reminded of T S Eliot’s words from the beginning of Ash Wednesday:
April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
In a way we all live our lives between memory – what has gone before, and desire – what we hope will happen.  But that tends to leave out the immediate present!  This is the God-given present moment: God’s sacred gift to us.  So let us go forward into this month of new green leaves enjoying the present moment, not letting the cutting east winds of life chill our spirits.

For many families and young people the start of the summer term is the final run-down to exams or change of school or move to college so very good wishes to you all.  Work well and may your plans come to fruition.

Every blessing
The Rev’d Canon Gillian Greenslade

NEWS FOR ALL PARISHES

ANNUAL PARISH COUNCIL MEETING

Taking place on Sunday 20th April in Great Easton church at 12 noon, this is an opportunity for members of the electoral rolls of our four churches to have your say and to vote.  Relevant papers and reports for the meeting will be available two weeks beforehand.  Do try to come along to support the church officers.  The meeting will be followed by a picnic lunch.

REMEMBER: THE NEW NAME FOR FIVE PARISHES’ CHEQUES

As the Rector explained in the January issue, PCC treasurer Pat O’Gorman has the new computer system operating, as a result of which all Five Parishes monies are held now in one bank account.  This does not alter in any way the records of the individual churches as these are maintained separately within Pat’s system and each church committee retains responsibility for administering the financial affairs of its church.

What this does mean is that all cheques paid to any of the four churches must now be made payable to The Five Parishes.  The old bank accounts will shortly be closed and so both Pat and the church treasurers will be unable to bank a cheque made payable to a church.  Cheques can still be sent to the church treasurer – they are still involved in the banking of money/record keeping – or can be given direct to Pat at New House, The Endway, Great Easton.  With this new system she does not retain any cash at that address.

THE COUNTESS OF WARWICK’S COUNTRY SHOW

Please put the date of Sunday/Bank Holiday Monday 24th/25th August 2008 in your diary now.  As a visitor you will be most welcome.  If you want to have even more fun by getting involved, then in the first instance call the Editor on 01371 872894 or email angela.harbottle@virgin.net.  All other activities are well in hand – if you want to make a booking of any sort, contact the Editor and she will put you in touch with the member of the Show team concerned.

 Scarecrow Competition

A competition will be held again this year with the final judging taking place on the first day of the Show.  Entry forms will be available from all the churches in the Five Parishes from the beginning of June.  The competition will be open to all ages from 8 to 90 years – so start planning your design now!

CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS WITHIN THE FIVE PARISHES

THE FRIENDS OF THE FIVE PARISHES

Plans are well in hand for events during the coming year.  Owing to the chairman’s operations, these were curtailed during 2007 but the firm favourite Members’ Evening will be held during the summer – see next issue for details.  Meanwhile dates for your diaries are: the Annual General Meeting on Thursday 15th May, the Magic Evening of Friday 31st October and Annual Evensong on Sunday 16th November when the address will be given by popular author Dr Ronald Blythe.

The Friends will have a stand at the Duton Hill Funday and at the Warwick Show.  Also this year the Executive Committee will be hosting on Friday 13th June in Little Easton the 7th Working Supper for representatives of Friends groups within the Colchester Deanery area at which the Archdeacon of Colchester, Ven Annette Cooper, will be present.

THE FRIENDS OF THE FIVE PARISHES 50% CLUB

There are just five more chances to win in this round.  If you would like more information please in the first instance call the Editor on 01371 872894 or email angela.harbottle@virgin.net.  The Club exists as a fundraising arm of The Friends of the Five Parishes and recently gave a cheque to The Friends for £850 towards the upkeep of churches in the Five Parishes.

A REDUCTION IN INCOME TAX – AND IN INCOME!

Tax changes in April include a reduction in the basic rate from 22% to 20% but at the same time the 10% band will be scrapped – so not necessarily as beneficial for everyone as might be expected!  Our churches, and The Friends of the Five Parishes, will be affected too since this will reduce the amount of tax that can be reclaimed under the Gift Aid scheme.

This scheme widen the scope of reclaimable tax, for instance it now includes plate collections at church services and membership subscriptions for charities such as The Friends.  A donation given under this scheme meant that the charity has been receiving an extra 28p in the £ but this will now reduce to 25p.  To illustrate this, it must be remembered that reclaimed tax is equivalent to the tax paid by the donor on the gross amount earned.  Taking £100 as an easy example, the calculation is £100 x 22 ÷ 78 = £28.  Working backwards: £100 + £28 = £128 x 22% = £28.  The comparable calculation based on the new rate of 20% is £100 x 20 ÷ 80 = £25.

The churchwardens and the trustees of The Friends are truly grateful to all those who responded to the Rector’s plea for pledges for the churches and those who joined The Friends in response to their new leaflet.  People with existing pledges to the churches had to renew these in order to make them payable to The Five Parishes in line with the new computer system and the churchwardens are even more grateful to those who increased their rate of giving at the same time.  This will help to offset the reduction in reclaimable tax.

FIVE PARISHES FARE – YOUR FAVOURITE RECIPES

No matter what age you are, there is little so enjoyable as a freshly baked cookie.  The term “cookie” was first used in the United States when early Dutch settlers brought their koekje (little cakes) to New York and their popularity soon spread.  They always feel like the ultimate treat, despite the fact that they are so simple to make.  Here are two - one sweet, one savoury.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

To make about 12 you will need:

110g (4oz) butter, softened
110g (4oz) caster sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract
175g (6oz) plain flour
175g (6oz) plain chocolate chips

Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale and fluffy.  Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.  Fold in the flour with the chocolate chips.  Drop teaspoons of the mixture onto lined baking sheets, leaving room for them to spread, and flatten slightly with a fork.  Bake at 180°C (160°C fan oven/gas mark 4) for about 10 minutes or until golden.  Transfer carefully to a wire rack to cool.

Cheddar Crisps

110g (4oz) finely grated Cheddar cheese
4 rounded tsps plain flour
flaked almonds, pistachio nuts or paprika (optional)

Heat the oven to 220°C (200°C fan oven/gas mark 7).  Line a baking sheet with non-stick paper.  Combine the grated cheese with the flour and spoon small circles of the mixture onto the paper, each one about 5cm (2 inches) wide and just 2mm deep.  Bake for 5 minutes or until the crisps are golden at the edges.  Lift them off carefully with a palette knife and leave to cool.  For variety, add a pinch of almonds, chopped pistachios or paprika to the surface of the biscuits before cooking.

If you have a favourite recipe, seasonal or otherwise, which you would like to share, in the first instance call the Editor on 01371 872894 or email angela.harbottle@virgin.net.

GREAT EASTON CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

It doesn't seem possible that I am already entering my second year as headteacher of Great Easton Primary School. This time last year I was writing my first article for the Magazine and introducing myself to you all. Over the last year I have enjoyed meeting so many of you through events at school, services at Great Easton church or PCC meetings. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year and would like to thank you all for making me feel so welcome and very much a part of the Five Parishes.

April, like any month will be a very busy one for everyone at Great Easton. Our Year 5 pupils are off on their annual residential trip to Bradwell Outdoor Centre. During the week long trip, the children will be taking part in sailing, climbing, crabbing, canoeing, mountain biking and archery. For some of the children it may be their first time away from home and at the moment seem a little daunting (for children and parents alike!). But as well as all the activities provided, the children will develop their own levels of independence and learn the value of working as a team, all key skills for later life.

During April our Key Stage 2 (7-11) children will start to learn a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) as part of the curriculum. For the first time, French and Spanish will become part of the weekly timetable and perhaps in the not too distant future some of the children will be able to write in the 'Cinq Paroisses' Magazine either 'en Francais' or 'en Espanol'.

Finally, one of the most important roles of the school in the five parishes is its close links with Great Easton church. Over the last six years Rev'd Gillian has been a regular visitor to the school for her fortnightly assemblies, termly communion services as well as leading Harvest, Christmas, Easter and Leaver's services in the church and also taking a lead role on the school's governing body.

Soon Gillian will be enjoying her much deserved and well earned retirement, but I'm very pleased to say that she has already ensured that our close links with the church will continue. Over the next few weeks Rev'd Cilla Hawkes will be working alongside Gillian on her visits to Great Easton and getting to know the children, staff and school. Then in June, Rev'd Cilla will be taking all our services, communions and assemblies until Gillian's permanent replacement is appointed.

LITTLE EASTON NEWS

LITTLE EASTON PARISH COUNCIL

The Parish Council would like to thank the publicans of The Stag for allowing the last two meetings to be conducted in the pub. The next meeting will be held at the Memorial Hall - members were getting a little too comfortable!

Plans are underway for adding large plant-filled containers at the entrance to the village and at the Memorial Hall. Hopefully this will stand the village in good stead when it enters the Best Kept Village competition in 2008.

On a more serious note, it has been noted that dogs are still not being kept on leads in and around the village. Once again it must be stressed dogs must be kept on leads on a public highway. It is causing concern for some members of the parish. Please keep your dogs under control at all times.

The next meting will be held at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday 23rd April at 8.00 pm. This will be the annual assembly.

If anyone has four hours a week to spare and is interested in becoming the Parish Clerk please phone 01371852209. It is an interesting and varied job and the pay is not too bad either!

GREAT EASTON NEWS

GREAT EASTON & TILTY PARISH COUNCIL incorporating DUTON HILL

At the February Council meeting it was decided to appoint JGA Grasscare as the Council's grass cutting contractors for the 2008 season. It was agreed that this was a sensible decision not only for financial reasons but to support local advertisers in the Magazine.

The news received that the Tilty Mill appeal had been dismissed shows that small groups can win if they protest loudly enough. There will be a meeting in Great Easton Village Hall for interested parties to find the way forward - time and date to be confirmed. Anyone interested should in the first instance call the Editor on 01371 872894 or email angela.harbottle@virgin.net..

Date for your diary. There will be a presentation on the forthcoming battle against BAA's second runway plans by Stop Stansted Expansion at the Council meeting on Thursday 26th June. More details next month.

This is a public meeting when the committee will be elected and residents will have a chance to raise and discuss matters of concern to all who live in the village.

DUTON HILL FUNDAY: MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU

The annual Funday organised by the Duton Hill Community Association will take place as usual on the Sunday of the May bank holiday weekend. That's the 4th May, so naturally the theme for the day is STAR WARS - may the fourth be with you!

The rerun of the Funday promises to be as big and spectacular as ever. The fun starts with the parade at 11.30 am, followed by the official opening at midday at The Three Horseshoes. There is a children's fancy dress competition, and adults are encouraged to join in by dressing to reflect the Star Wars theme.

There will be displays throughout the day of modern dancing, line dancing and maypole dancing, and the return of the famous funday dog agility competition (entry fee one pound a hound) to help find the dog Star. The Duton Hill Yacht Club will provide a BBQ and there will be firm favourites like Splat the Rat, Smash those Plates, a tombola, raffle, bottle stall, plant stall, cake stall, face painting and more. All of this, plus an out-of-this-world selection of real ales at The Horseshoes space station.

The proceeds from the day will be shared by two local community charities, SSE and The Friends of the Five Parishes. So go along and support your local community - no need to travel to a galaxy far, far away to enjoy the holiday weekend.

STAR WARS - THE PREQUEL

The team ask: "Help us to make it all happen. We need donations of bric-à-brac, plants, cakes and full bottles for the bottle stall. If you have something to offer or would like to help before or on the day, then you should go to 5 Abbey View or call 01371 870758 and speak to Obi Ben Spinks."
